I have never willed so much for any movie to be good, as I did for SLUMDOG MILLIONARE.
In case you haven’t heard of this movie, it is the latest Danny Boyle flick Slumdog Millionaire. And contrary to what the Indian media reports, this is not an Anil Kapoor movie or Irfan Khan movie.
When you have slept just 4 hrs of the last 40 and have an assignment to complete before midnight, it better be something special if you sneak out to catch it. And special it was!
You enter in anticipating some awesome music (A.R. Rahman), maverick cinematography (novel work in terms of camera and technology), good acting, brilliant writing (Academy award winner Simon Beaufoy) and perfect direction (Danny Boyle). But five seconds into the movie, you are completely taken in by the power and pace and by the time the credits roll, all you can mutter is “What a movie !”. Most of the audience were choked by the end and a few of them in tears. And all this without any scene high on emotions. Its the story !
For an English writer and director to come down to Mumbai and capture it the way they have done, is phenomenal. And Rahman dishes out a special score. It is widely anticipated to show some considerable presence at the Academy Awards. Oscar worthy or not, I do not know.
But definitely, one of the finest I have seen in quite some time....
